October 13 Back at it again This weekend I did my first race since my injury and it felt really good to be back on the bike in a race! We drove up to Moraine state park for the final Month of Mud race and it was an unbelievable fall day. There was a really big turnout and a lot of fast guys in the expert class. I had a bad start but it was a long double track start and went into a big climb so I made my way to the front pack. They really were going after the first climb on those single speeds but once we hit the flat the slowed so I came around and put the hammer down and made them spin like crazy. It was short lived and on the next climb into the single track I lost some positions. I had some really good power for about 30 minutes but faded after that, the rock at this place were relentless and I think I was the only guy on 26 inch wheels. The 29er's had the advantage for sure at this place! All in all I ended up 5th place expert and I am pretty happy with that for now. August 14 Early end to a great sesonI think my racing season is over I had I really bad crash while on an urban assault mission and ended up in the hospital with a dislocated hip! I sat in the hospital awaiting possible surgery but they decided against it and am now at home trying to recover so I can start my easy base miles and get my hip back into shape fo next season. Maybe if I am lucky I will possibly be able to make an showing at Iceman but only time will tell. All I can say is I hope none of you guys and girls out there ever have to experience this it was by far the most pain I have ever felt!! National ChampionshipsNational Championships was a Blast and I am very happy with my results ! I did three events Cross country, super-d, and Short track! Cross Country was the first event and for the first time it was dry at Mt. Snow. They changed the course a little this year and I wasn't trilled to say the least. It was made less technical in the begining and favored the really stong climbers. I am a good climber but am a really capable rider and the tech stuff helps me out at this venue. The start was really fast and the pace was brutal but after the first lap I was sitting in the top ten and was feelling really strong. I really thought I could hold the pace but the heat and the pace was starting to wear on me by the third lap and I had to really back it down to recover. Dave started to pull away from me I had him in my sights the entire race till then then Ben passed me like I was standing still! He was looking really strong and ended up in the top ten. In the last lap I got some pop back but it was to late to get back in it and ended up 23 out of almost 70 semi-pro's not to shabby.
Next up was Super-D! I was really excited for this race and was riding a really cool Trance X0 5 inches, front and back. I didn't get to practice prior to the race so I woke up early and got up there to geet in a run to pick some good lines and only made it like a quater mile and pinch flatted! Should of been tubeless but it's a demo bike from the shop. I ran the bike to the top and no one had a tube so back down to the bottom on the lift to fix my broken bike. By the time I got back to the top they were waiting for me and I got stuck in the second row with a lemans style start that wasn't good. Off we go running with our bikes up a hill and I feel something rubbing my back It's Adam Craigs front tire! He had his bike on his shoulder giving it hell so I figured what a great idea. He jumps on his bike just ahead of me and took off like a dirt bike I slammed into my pedals and followed but had no chance Matching the Olympians insane power! I got stuck in the back pack entering the first section of singletrack and Adam managed to get onto the lead group. We came out of the singltrack onto a doubletrack climb and I watched Adam pass the rest of the field like he had a motor on his bike and i managed to get around a few more but the lead pack was to far ahead to bridge to. I ended up 14th in the Pro Super-D not to bad for having a bad start! I really wish I would have put my Garmin on the bike for this event I think I achieved speeds in excess of 50 mph! In one section coming off the double track into singletrack I bottom the 5 inch fork multiple times trying to slow down for the woods! Next time I think a 6 inch Moto will be in order!! At only 28 Pound I think it will be a great Super-D machine.
The last event was Short Track and I was really Hoping for a good result. It is quite a chore just to sty on the lead lap and not get pulled in this event and I managed to stay on and ended up in 18th place and not far of the leaders at all it was really hard and I am pretty confident if I had been better rested for the event I might have had a podium in me I was about 10 beats of my max and 162 bpm versus 175 in the XC race. But I was just happy to stay on the lead lap and beat a bunch of really fast guys that got me in the XC race July 09 Much needed update I have been so busy with riding and stuff I just don't have time to sit on the pc. Well the Mohican 100k went pretty well for having 2 flat tires and breaking my chain at the top of the last big climb with less than 10 miles to go where I was passed by Travis, Gunner and Rudy I chased down rudy on the road which really suprised me because he is a monster on the road! I ended up in 6th place just out of the money, oh well it was really fun anyway! After that was the 24 Hours of big bear where we took 2nd place in the 4 man expert class. Dave Walker, Tim Mould, Jake Grantham and myself battled the hole race with some fierce competition. I missed the hot lap by less then a minute at 1:08 and Dave was only off thaat by a little bit with a flat tire! We stayed consistant thru the night and turn some fast laps in the morning to real in 2nd place but not enough to overtake Dirty Harry's. All in all an awesome effort by everyone. I have also been trying to make it to the Sat. Vultures Knob races and had an awesome 2nd place finish in the mud after a crazy storm that delayed the start. It was a stacked field and I was really happy with my performance against a bunch of really fast guy's. I am now just trying to prepare for National Championships. I will be racing XC, ST, and Super D!! Fun Fun Fun May 29 A great holiday weekendMy weekend started off on Friday and I went to Cleveland to meet up with Lauren to ride Mohican state forest! No matter how many times I ride this trail it never ceases to amaze me it is truly incredible and is getting better and better as the trail runs in. Lauren did her best time ever at 2:40 minutes about 20 minutes faster than her previous best. She is riding really well. After an amazing day on the trail we retired to my favorite restaurant MELT! I miss it alot the food is awesome!
This is where it gets totally crazy, I had to work at the bike shop at 10 am so I got up early and drove to Pittsburgh to work and asked my manager Chuck if I could get out a little early to race at Vultures Knob. He said " Are you F---ing nuts" but said if we were slow I could go. At three it was slow and he told me to get out of there and that I did. Back to Ohio I went and another 40 dollar fill up. These gas prices are insane! I am really glad my car is small and gets good gas mileage I average around 33mpg not bad considering how heavy my foot is.
I arrive at the Knob with about 20 minutes to spare and get suited up for the start. It is kinda neat showing up to races where your not expected and seeing the reactions of your fellow racers. There were some really fast guy's lined up for the start and the course was DRY! This is the first dry race I did all season! I was a little worried at the start about how hard I rode the day before at Mohican as I did not expect to get out of work early and get to race. At the call we were off and Brad got an awesome start from a trackstand I fell in close behind him in second and we got to the single track in fast order. I could not believe the speed Brad was going through the woods it was all I could do to stay on his wheel and in the first lap he got a little gap on me and never let up. Steve was right behind me for a while and must of had some issue but soon after in this crazy new section I don't really like much he bridged back to me and passed me in the furnace. I grabbed his wheel for the rest of the first lap but was already feeling a little tired from the crazy fast pace being set by Brad. I was pretty sure Brad was on a mission to beat me from the moment I saw him at the start. For lap 2 I decided to try to set a hard pace I could maintain the rest of the race and hold off the rest of the guy's back there, but that Whitney Jones who has been living in Colorado going to college there decided it was a good day to stomp me, caught me and let me know who was faster. This all after he tried to tell us all he wasn't in shape at all. All kidding aside Whitney is gonna be a really fast dude if he starts training for real. He proceeded to drop me and I ended up in 4th place. Not to bad after riding really hard the day prior.
I gotta give props to all involved in setting up this race series the turnout was awesome the trail was in great shape and the after party was a blast. There was a huge bonfire and beer from Sierra Nevada and a lot of good friends. What more could you ask for at a mountain bike race?
In the morning it was back to the bike shop in Pittsburgh. Holy shit that was a lot of driving! So I am at work and Brian Parker says he is coming up with an I- nine wheel to put new bearings in, cool. We fix his wheel and he says " anyone riding tonight?" sure I say why not. So off to Frick Park we go 20 miles and 2400ft. of climbing later he asks if I want to go up to Kenerdale and camp out with a bunch of friends and ride on Monday. What the hell why not? We drive to Brian's about 45 minutes away and he drove the rest of the way up the the camp. We arrive to a super cool A-frame cabin in the mountains and are greeted by a super bunch of guys and one girl all hanging out in the hot tub. Jason the owner jumps out and takes us in to the giant pot of pasta and meatballs. This stuff was so good I ate three plates of it. I drank a beer and we all retired to bed to get some rest for the day of riding in the morning.
We wake up in the morning and the gracious host he was Jason made and awesome breakfast eggs, pancakes, sausage. From there it just got better the trail was less than a mile away and we rode to it in a big pack of giddy, silly mountain bikers. These trails are absolutely beautiful, there is everything from the 12 creek crossings to super tech rock gardens, fast nasty downhills, mile long climbs, and logs lots of them not cut out of the trail. How about that a real mountain bike trail, not a manicured NORBA course with a bunch of people complaining that it is to technical. Anyway this place is super cool and I can't wait to come back and ride it again.
Four days of riding and close to 100 miles of offroad riding including a race. Hope that sets me up good for the Mohican 100 this weekend May 22 The WildsAnother mudfest whats new. It rained all night before the race leaving the trail in bad shape for the race and it got real windy and sunny during the race so everything turned to peanut butter by lap two. The kind of mud that sticks to everything and rips off derailuers. Not mine this time thank God! I got a good start and went into the woods about 4th place Walker was out front and got washed out in the mud and went down. Ben took advantage of it and took off with me and Steve chasing hard but that 29er of his with those boggers was flying! We got to a hard steep climb and I couldn't find traction, Ben's big wheels did though and he made the climb. When Steve and I crested the top Ben was gone! Dave caught us and I caught a pedal on something on a fast decent and somehow didn't crash but tweaked my back pretty good in the process. The next climb Dave came around us and was on the gas hard I tryed to chase him but he was flyin and I couldn't match his power. Shortly after that Steve came around me and again I couldn't stay on his wheel either. I was sitting in 4th and figured I could hold on to it if I could keep a steady pace in the mud. In the first lap the mud was thin and traction was decent but when we came around for lap 2 it was thick and sticky and trail was in really bad shape I found myself running alot of the climbs I made easily in the first lap and was thankful for my toe spike on my new Diadora shoes which by the way are totally awsome shoes, I loved my Sidi's but I think these are better. With about 3 miles to go I saw Justin from Dirty Harry's behind me and tried like hell to hold him off but he was rollin on his 29er wheels through the nasty stuff alot better than me and I crashed hard chasing him. I settled in and went into survival mode just hoping to finish, then about a mile from the finish I see none other than Brad Wilhelm and he was being sneaky of course! So I went from survival mode to oh shit mode and had enough in the tank to hold him off for 5th place. All in all it was not a bad finish for the conditions and the field of talented riders who showed up. May 07 Dirt , Sweat and GearsThis weekend I headed to Tennessee for DSG 12 hours race. I meet up with my teammate Sally Collins in Indiana and we drove down in the RV. That thing is flippin awesome! It is like a house on wheels. We get down to the venue and the place is already packed and we set up camp next to Rob Krantz and the Yazoo boy's sweet!! Rob had just won the SSUSA title nice work Rob!! Sally and I decided to go pre-ride the course and it was in perfect condition. The trail was totally awsome with great tech singletrack and around 1500' of climbing per lap with smoking fast decents. This is one of the best supported races I have ever been to in your goody bag at registration there was a glass a t-shirt and a pair of Swiftwick socks which by the way are the most amazing socks on the planet no joke! We retire to the RV and make a big pasta dinner and get to bed because the race starts at 9:00 a.m. At about 2am I am woke up by the sound of rain, great! This didn't stop until about an hour before the race start and turned the trail into a slick mess.
The plan was for me to double up on the first lap and try to get a lead. The race started out like I had planned I was first on the bike and got out in the front and gave it all I had. I was only challenged by one guy Criag Evans who happened to be racing in my class and is one of the top ranked xterra athletes in the country. He went into the single track in first but that didn't last long. I caught him quick and passed him on the slick trail and then it was just me and the trail. Not far behind was Tinker and Nat Ross two of the best endurance racers in the country! We came out of the single track to the first big double track climb and it was turning to peanut butter. I attacked it and just made it to the top, I looked back and they were all walking it! Holy shit I gotta lay it down right now and I did just that once I got back into the single track the trail was still slick but not to bad but the mud from the double track was taking it's toll on my drivetrain. My bike was shifting really bad and I was losing time to Tinker who was starting to close on me a little. With about 2 miles to go we passed our camp on the trail and I let Tinker past so I could make sure Sally new I needed her for the next lap cause I was supposed to do two. I got back on Tinkers wheel and was determined to win the lap. We come out back to double track and I miss a stupid little climb and have to step off my bike for the first time in the lap and within 5 steps my wheels wouldn't turn due to the sick mud. I dragged my bike into the weeds and got it so it would roll again and took 2 pedal strokes and CRUNCH my rear derailuer is just about ripped off my bike. So I started running about 1 1/2 miles to be exact and come in 5th place on the first lap overall. Sally is there waiting and takes off I just go and lay on the ground I was destroyed with only one lap down it was gonna be a long day.
My bike was a disaster broken hanger, derailuer, housing I had alot of work to do and it took 20 minutes just to get all the mud off. By the time I got my bike going it was time to get out for another lap I should have taken time for food and hydration but it really didn't work out the way I planned. The good thing was that the sun was out and it was windy and the trail was in almost in perfect shape already from what everyone was saying. Sally had some problems of her own on her first lap she broke her hanger and had on with her and fixed it right on the trail and still turned a respectable lap. My next four laps were awesome the trail was perfect and my bike worked perfectly. My second lap I missed the hot lap by 20 seconds but that was short lived the conditions got better as the day went on and a guy turned a 51 minute lap same guy turned a 53min night lap! My fastest was 57 min. After my first lap I just didn't have what it took to go that fast and was having some issues with cramping. In the end I did 5 laps and Sally did 4 laps with an injured leg. We ended up winning the duo coed Pro class and had alot of fun, this is by far one of the best races I have ever done! Greenbriar ClassicSo I went to Greenbriar with high hopes and trained really hard for it all to dnf from a mechanical. I had a really good race going was running in a solid 5th place on the 3rd lap in the back decent I was forced into a bad line due to some slower rider who decided not to move out of the way and I flatted my front tire. I forgot my inflater at work and that was the end of my race. Lesson learned I now keep a spare co2 in my glovebox. April 14 Mt. Wood race reportSo me and my teammate Tim Mould head down to Mt. Wood for a day of racing and fun. The weather said rain and 45 degrees not so nice but what the hell. When we get there it is just sprinkling a little bit and I am told that the trails are in nice shape! Cool!! I feel great and am confident in my training for the race we line up for the start in a stacked field of 30 Pro's/Semi-Pro's/and Experts and off they go! They go because bang I drop my chain off my big chainring! I just replaced my chain and cassette but I rode it afterward and thought the chainrings were ok guess not! I finally got going and the entire field had a large lead on me I gave it all I had and caught them before the first doubletrack climb and picked my way through to 3rd place going into the singletack. I was happy to get there but burned a lot of matches doin it that was an all out effort. I settled in and tried to recover a little and got passed by Gunner grabbed his wheel and we were running back up to Andy and Dave when I crashed on one of the many wood bridges slick from being wet and muddy. Gunner and the boys got a little bit ahead of me but not out of sight we got into some tight single track again and I lost sight of them then the next opening they were gone! I thought holy shit they really picked it up oh well I was happy with my placing and rode my own race for the rest of the course. With about 2 miles to go I saw Ben on a switchback and thought he was running me down so I stepped it up a notch and crash I go down hard in a fast corner. That hurt! Better just finish the race! Ben wasn't as close as I thought and when I came across the finish they tell me I won? hmm I ask them what about Walker, Andy and Gunner, turns out somehow they took a wrong turn and did the prologe twice. That sucks . Well I don't know what would have happened if they didn't take that turn but I was strong till the end I think it would have been interesting. Anyway I ended up with my first OMBC 1st place and I will take it!! Tim Mould ended up 14th after having dropped his chain into his spokes lossing several minutes and fighting back to past midpack. Ben ended up 2nd and Brad was 7th hell off a showing against those super fast WV guys April 10 Endless TrainingSo since the move to Pittsburgh I have rode every single day! I even got my first road bike a Caad 9 Cannondale it is really fast! Davis has to be so proud I even have a power tap on it to show my power output. I have to admit it is pretty neat stuff. I hit 987 watts during intervals yesterday and my average was just over 400 whatever that means I guess it is pretty good. Mt. Wood is this Sunday we will see how all this training will pan out. I also got my new 09 Canaan frame and will put it toghether as soon as I get some needed parts the new frame is anodized black and it looks great. I will post some pics when it is built. April 02 Night Rides RuleTodd, Jake and myself went for a night ride tonight a Frick park. It was super fun the trails in Pittsburgh rock an they are legal to boot. Unbelievable!!! There is nothing like rippin up single track in the dark with a couple of good buddies. March 31 Chickasaw Trace "Mudfest"March 25 Move to PittsburghSo I recently moved to Pittsburgh and took a job with Pittsburgh Pro Cycle. The move was kind of sudden but it seems to be a good thing for me right now. The riding here is fantastic and I have been training really hard here. We will see how it works out at Chickasaw Trace this weekend in Tenn.! March 11 New Hardtail frame So I have a new Meteore hardtail frame on the way for the 2008 season. I will probably be using it for the courses with a lot of climbing considering that it is a sub 3 pound frame with my build up it will be around 20 pounds! I will post some pics as soon as it gets in and I will get the weight of it complete. I will also be testing an all new 09 Canaan frame in the next month both it and the Meteore are made from a new G7 tube set that is substantially lighter and stronger than the G6 on the earlier models. In the end I will have a 20 pound hardtail and a sub 23 pound, 4 inch travel Canaan Team! That is more than I could have ever asked for this season and I am looking forward to a great year! I will post pics of both bikes as soon as there are complete. Here are some pics of the new Meteore hardtail it weighed in at 21 pounds and I am going to take another pound off with tires, rotors, and a lighter saddle. So it should be right at 20 pound for race day. March 10 Winter Storm So here in Cleveland there isn't much to write about other than the weather so that is what I am gonna do. The past week has been the worst of the entire winter and it's March, go figure our first race of the state series is in 20 days. The week started out with an ice/shit storm as I call them, it happens when the temperatures are border line freezing and it cannot decide if it's gonna rain or snow. I plowed for 15 hours on Tuesday night from that one, it was the heaviest snow I have ever pushed! Then on Friday it started snowing and didn't stop till Sunday morning. It was probably the worst storm in Ohio since the 70's I think around 20 inches in most places and more in some. I started plowing on Friday night at 2:00 am and it was the worst conditions I have ever been in hands down. Visibility was probably 100ft. and it did not let up ever not once until the storm ended early Sunday morning. I drive a F-350 four wheel drive dump truck with a salt spreader full of salt and six brand new BFG all terrain tires and it was still a chore to stay on the road and out of the ditches. Saturday morning people were blowing my mind trying to drive"WHY" there were people stuck everywhere. The radio and T.V. were not kidding when they said stay home and off the roadways, our main highway I 71 shut down, but people had to get somewhere I am not sure where too it was Saturday and everything was closed cause there was another 10 more inches supposed to fall and it sure did. I pushed and pulled out around 30 cars and trucks and got stuck myself pushing an enormous pile of snow. I sat and watched a lady try to drive her little front wheel drive honda through 15 inches of snow, she looks at me and says "I'm stuck" no shit idiot! Then proceeded to tell me I needed to due my job better! The nerve of some people, and this trend continued until the end. After I pushed her back in her spot I told her the roads are not any better and they weren't they were actually probably worse or the same. She reluctantly went back in her apartment all pissed off at us cause we were making it snow ya know!!! When it was all said and done we plowed for 30 hours with only 4 hours of sleep total, with people complaining the entire time!! People never cease to amaze me with there unbelievable expectations and there inability to understand that this was not a normal snowfall and that we did all we could with what we had. I think I heard thankyou maybe once or twice the entire time plowing, unbelievable. So now we have to wait for it all to melt and then for it to dry out before we can ride offroad. Thank God for Ray's huh. March 03 Snake creek gap #3 I haven't blogged in a while, we had our computer die and just got a new laptop so I am back in business. Last month was really uneventful anyway. I didn't get to ride off road at all and hardly trained enough because of the super cold temps we had. I know I should man up and just ride but I just got sick of being cold and cannot stand riding a trainer for hours. It is 60 degrees today and I am gonna take full advantage of that!! So we went down to Georgia for the final Snake and it snowed and then rained the entire trip down. I was thinking as we got closer that we were in for a muddy race for sure but when we got to Dalton the rain let up to a light sprinkle and by the time we got out of dinner had just about stopped. Up in the parking lot were alot of welcoming faces camping and the Yazoo boy's were in the house with great beer. I headed for bed with clearing sky's above us. Saturday morning we woke to partly sunny sky's and warm temp's for so early in the morning. I also woke to a whole bunch of super fast competition, Harlan Price and Sam Koeber along with another one of his buddy's from Canada just for starters, it was gonna be a slug fest today. I got up to the start early to avoid having to deal with traffic and started in the first wave ahead of Thomas Turner and a bunch of fast guy's. On the first big climb they caught me and passed in a paceline so i figured there's the money I got to go for it, I jumped on board and that was a big mistake at this race with my lack of training last month. It hurt me real bad and it took me till past the halfway to recover from push I made to stay with the leaders. I was suffering and was having a real hard time just turning the pedals and Rob caught me on his single speed, he looked back and said "come on, jump on" I replied "I am hurting Rob" again he looks back at me more assertive this time "jump on Tim" so I did and Holy Shit !! He was on a mission, he was absolutely flying! I was feeding of him and he pulled me back to Dave Hall who had passed me earlier and then proceeded to disappear in the miles of rock gardens before the finish. I was felling better and did real well through the rocks but in the end I ended up with my slowest time of the series at 3:23. My time from Feb. of 3:11 keep me in the top ten in the pro money class and I was pretty happy with that in the wake of such formidable competition. Rob Krantz laid down a record single speed time of 3:16:30 nice job Rob and thanks for the moral support in the race. Lauren shaved a solid 30 minutes off hear time in Feb. and won the woman under 30 class, Tiffany Kenney won the over 30 ,34 mile class all in all Ohio took a large percent of the podium. There was great weather and great single track, a bad day on the bike is better than almost anything I can think of I was just glad to be riding sweet Georgia single track in early March instead of staring at the snow! February 05 Race report Snake creek gap #2 was on Sat. and it was 60 degrees and sunny, what a perfect day for a race! To bad it rained like hell the week prior to the race. My goal for this race was to hit 3:00 or better but that didn't happen. I hate to blame it on the conditions but it was pretty muddy in the first 17 miles and the creek crossings were deep an stripped everyone's chains of vital lubrication for the second half of the race. My Canaan Team worked flawlessly in the conditions and that was a plus, but anytime I dropped to my middle ring it felt like I tied an anchor to my bike and I could feel it through the cranks grinding so I just rode in the big ring for almost the whole second 17 miles other than the wall which I climbed for the first time ever in the middle ring, I was super stoked! All in all it was a good ride considering the conditions of the race and I beat my last time by 5 min coming in at 3:11 not to bad. Brad Wilhelm had an awesome race at 3:14 as did Christina with an 4th place ranking in the womans money class at 4:11!! My girlfriend Lauren took her first run ever at the 34 miler and finished in just over 5 hours not bad for her first time. The Spin crew all had impressive times again with Davis wiping 10 min off his time from last month at 3:24. Special thanks to Pabst Blue Ribbon for the beer for the after party it was a hit!! January 29 Snake Creek Gap #2http://www.nwgasorba.org/the_snake.html So the second part of the three race series is this Saturday. I am pretty sure we are gonna have the biggest group from Ohio ever and I think it is awesome! The first time I did the race was when I was living in Tenn. in the winter of 2006. I was just looking around on the internet for some close races and there it was, 32 miles point-to-point, registration for all 3 races was only $60 with a t-shirt, cool! It was going to be my first year racing as an expert and I figured that 32 miles would be a good way to test myself. My god did it test me, I finished the race in 4:20 and could barely pedal due to the insane cramps in my legs! I questioned myself after that race would I be able to compete as an expert? I was determined to due better and decided that these races would be part of my winter training. So that is what I did the second race I finished in 4:14 with all kinds of issues like a broken chain and a flat tire but he cramps were not near as bad this time. Before the last race I completely replaced my destroyed drivetrain and had a really good race and finished at 3:42, I shaved 38 minutes off my first attempt. I have become a more complete cyclist since then and this race continues to challenge me. This race will challenge your mental fortitude like no other I have raced. Since I first raced it has went to 34 miles and I think it's challenge is part to do with the time of the year too. But it could have something to do with the fact that the last 7 miles are just brutal. For anybody who has rode Mohican state forest, just add 10 miles and over double the climbing, and instead of the beginning being the hardest part the end is. The people at this race totally rock. I cannot say enough about how well this race is run or enough about how good the chili and the cobbler are after the race. For some reason I thought maybe I could catch Thomas Turner this year but he is faster than ever. Not to say I am not going to try I always do but my realistic goal for Saturday is 3:00 or less. We will see if the mountain bike gods are friendly this race. I am really glad to see this race has turned into something really big and I think it will continue to grow in the future and be the premier east coast winter race. Here are some cool old photo's from the first year I did the race. If you look close my bike still had a set of old xt cranks on it. I upgraded to full xtr for the last race. January 23 Mohican state forest So my teammate and good friend Jake came into town for the Mongoose demo and we decide we are going to go to Mohican on Monday. Tim Mould had a doctors appointment so we got on the bikes at about 2 pm, good thing to cause the high was only 20 degrees. The trail was in perfect shape, I think frozen ground has to be the best traction there is possible it is down right amazing! I started out with a windproof coat on but within two miles I was stopping to shed it, cold or not I can't ride with one on it cooks me. My wool jersey with a long sleeve under it was plenty for me. I had my first experience on my new smallblock eight tires on ground that wasn't muddy and I was favorably impressed with there performance, but I think I still prefer the Karma. We started out with a strong pace to get warmed up and then I didn't let up for a minute my final time was 2:20 not bad after two day's of solid riding with the Mongoose boys at Ray's. Monday night I get a call from Brad "Hey Tim, wanna go to Mohican tomorrow?" sure why not. So it is Brad, myself and Brian. We meet at like 1pm and there is about an inch or so of snow cover, cool! Were getting suited up and Brian comes up and says "got an extra helmet?" nope I forgot mine to I realize, duh. Well we decide to ride anyway, probably not smart but we were there so we did anyway. Right after the first climb Brad passes me and lays it down, I had no chance I was totally spent. I had enough to stay in front of Brian but Brad thoroughly kicked my ass. I end up just about 2:30 not bad for felling like shit. The trail was a ton of fun in the snow, smallblock eights continue to impress me with tons of traction in the snow I didn't miss one climb in the snow! January 18 Mongoose demo day's at Ray'sMongoose is having demo days at Ray's this weekend. You will be able to ride just about anything in the lineup from the Canaan to the ECD. Darren and Chris are here both reps for Mongoose and also Eric Carter "downhill and fourX pro" will be attending this year. So if you find some time come out and check out the scene it should be alot of fun! |
